About the desk
Two people, one ranking a month, and a rule against writing about a game we have not opened.
Who we are
There are two of us. We both have day jobs that have nothing to do with games, and we read store listings in the evening because we find it interesting. One of us keeps the candidate file and drafts entries; the other is the editor on duty for a given edition and has the last word on order. That is the whole staff. We describe ourselves by role because the roles are what matter to a reader, and because a masthead of invented biographies would tell you nothing true.
The publication started in a shared notes file. It became a website when the notes file stopped being readable by anyone but us.
Why there is one ranking
A catalogue of hundreds of games is easy to build and useless to read. We would rather publish a short ordered list that we can defend line by line. One ranking a month, three to ten titles, each with a reason attached. When a listing changes materially — a price, a monetisation model, a major update that alters how the game plays — we revise the page rather than leaving a stale verdict in place.
Everything we do is editorial writing. No application is hosted here, nothing is distributed from this site, and every entry links out to its own Google Play listing, which is the place where price, content rating and device compatibility are actually settled.
How a game gets on the page
The shortlist starts with what is on the store in our market rather than with a list of favourites. A game reaches the candidate file because it does something structurally unusual, because it executes a familiar idea with unusual care, or because readers keep mentioning it. It leaves the file if we cannot get it running or cannot spend a genuine session with it. Then the two of us apply three criteria — input, intent and investment — and argue about order until it reads honestly. The full account is on how we rate.
Independence
We do not accept payment for placement. We do not run sponsored entries. There are no affiliate arrangements on this site, and no developer, publisher or agency has any say in the order of the ranking or the wording of an entry. If a studio writes to us, the letter is read like any other; it does not move a game. We also do not review games we have not opened ourselves, and we do not reprint another publication's verdict as if it were our own.
The Weekly Report is an independent editorial publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google LLC.
What you will not find here
No invented testing figures. We do not publish counts of hours logged, devices surveyed or players polled, because we have not counted them and would only be decorating an opinion with arithmetic. No awards we gave ourselves. No claims about how long we have been doing this beyond the year above. If a sentence on this site sounds like a measurement, it is either read from a listing or it should not be there — tell us if you find one that is neither.
